He may have won, but every anti-gay marriage/adoption bill passed (including California!), showing that the Right is still strong. Over 45% of Americans still voted for McCain/Palin. Obama is not Jack Layton, he’s likely closer to Stephen Harper/Michael Ignatieff (or the right-wing of the Liberal party) than any other Canadian politicians. Only small incremental changes are likely, and without continual lobbying, I doubt that all the education woes will vanish instantaneously, and there will be many more fights.
I think Obama is “one small step” in the right direction for the US, but it’s not “a giant leap” at all.
Yes, very sad about all the successful initiatives. I didn’t see much news coverage for that where I was watching. Telling?
Still, a small step left trumps a small step right. That pendulum has a long way to swing back.
The anti-gay bills may have passed but the anti abortion bills got shot down and while I sympathize with the GLBT community and would like to see a world where everyone is really free those items are not life threatening, safe abortions on the other hand do really save lives.
